HEMIPLEGIA

I am hoping to talk a lot more about my disability in further posts, first I'm going to start with my condition - Hemiplegia. Many people are probably unaware of this and what it entails. I was born premature and almost died, I had to have open heart surgery to keep me alive.

Hemiplegia is a condition that affects half of your body and is caused by parts of the brain being damaged. The most obvious effects of my condition is my foot, I limp and throughout childhood had to wear a splint and specialised footwear.

I want to raise awareness of my condition, growing up was hard and I always stood out. I could never wear the latest fashions like my sister i.e flimsy footwear such as flip flops were a big no no! However, I want to show people that a disability is not a hindrance and you can still look and feel good with it! I love fashion and love dressing up - I refuse to let my disability stop this! Instead I have had to find ways of dressing to accommodate this.

I am going to share with you tips and advice in upcoming posts. First, tips for covering a scar in the summer holidays (which is something I always wanted to do). At birth I had open heart surgery, this resulted in a scar (which has grown with me) that covers the majority of my right side back.

In no way am I encouraging that you cover your scars up! If you want to show it be proud its beautiful! I like to think of it as my life story - it shows how strong I am. However, for me, I like to keep it covered, its just personal preference, my scar is something special to me.

For holidays I never wear a bikini, now there is such a great range of options to choose from as well as beautiful cover-ups such as kaftans and kimonos. I hope you like my selections!

Black Costume | Monki
Denim Shirt | Rokit
Kimono | New Look
White Sandals | Birkenstock
Orange Sandals | Doc Martens (Similar here and here
Bikini | Topshop
Palazzo Pants | Nasty Gal
High Waisted Bikini Bottoms | American Apparel

There are some great sandals out there that give your feet better support, here is a small offering. The Doc Marten pair could also potentially accommodate a splint. I love high waisted bikini bottoms, they give a but of glamour and I tend to cover up with a loose vintage shirt - both these bikinis would look great with the shirt. Palazzo pants are a must, for me they cover my legs and are loose and comfy, whilst still looking stylish and keeping me cool. They are perfect if you wear a splint as they will fit over them easily. I would say get a slightly shorter pair, as they can sometimes be quite long and are easy to get caught and tripped over!

Kimonos are brilliant, they are loose and easy to wear, if you struggle with arm control they give much space and freedom of movement and the arm holes are large to fit through. I would wear this kimono with the simple black costume, or if your feeling daring clash with the printed bottoms!

I hope you enjoyed this post - keep tuned for more! I welcome any suggestions :)
I will be posting about my adventures in Edinburgh shortly too.
